Teachers’ Day: Celebrating the People Who Shape Our Future
Every year on 5 September, India celebrates Teachers’ Day to honour educators and remember Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, one of India’s most respected philosophers, scholars, and educationists.
Dr. Radhakrishnan was born on 5 September 1888. He served as India’s first Vice-President and second President and made significant contributions to education and philosophy.
Dr. Radhakrishnan’s Role in Education
Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan strongly believed that education is essential for building individuals and society. As a scholar and professor, he emphasized the importance of teachers in developing independent thinking, knowledge, values, and character.
When his students and friends wanted to celebrate his birthday after he became President in 1962, he expressed his wish that the day should instead be observed as Teachers’ Day, in honour of the teaching profession.
This idea reflects the respect he held for educators and their contribution to society.
The Role of Teachers in Our Society
Teachers play a role that goes far beyond textbooks and examinations. They help students develop confidence, discipline, curiosity, critical thinking, and the ability to face challenges.
A good teacher does not simply provide answers—they encourage students to think, question, learn, and grow independently.
Teachers also contribute to nation-building by preparing young people to become responsible and capable members of society.
For students pursuing demanding journeys such as actuarial science, the guidance and patience of teachers can make a meaningful difference. Concepts may need to be explained more than once, mistakes need to be corrected, and students often need encouragement to keep going after setbacks.
