How to Earn More

Seven things that actually move your salary.

Paper count matters most — but these levers compound on top of it.

Pass exams faster
Each extra paper cleared adds ₹40,000–₹80,000 to your package. Passing CP1 — the hardest paper — is a particularly strong signal.
Learn R and Python
Data science skills (R, Python, SQL, Power BI) command a 20–35% premium over pure actuarial skills at analyst and senior analyst level.
IFRS 17 expertise
With IRDAI mandating Ind AS 117 (Indian equivalent of IFRS 17), actuaries who understand the new standard are commanding significant premiums.
Move to a global firm
Moving from a domestic insurer to Milliman, WTW, Swiss Re, or a Big 4 practice typically delivers a 30–60% salary increase at the same exam stage.
Target reinsurance
Reinsurance (Swiss Re, Munich Re, RGA, GIC Re) pays 15–25% above equivalent insurer roles. Entry requires 4–5 papers minimum.
Relocate to Mumbai or Gurugram
Mumbai and Gurugram roles pay 10–20% more than the same role in Chennai, Bengaluru, or Kolkata due to cost of living and firm density.
Get IFoA / FIA alongside IAI
Holding both FIAI and FIA designations after the Fellowship MRA signals international credibility and can unlock consulting and global firm roles at a premium.
Location Factor

Where you work affects what you earn.

Relative salary index — Mumbai set to 100. Applies across all career stages, though the premium compresses slightly at Fellow level.

Mumbai 100%
Highest paying city — HQ of LIC, most life insurers, and GIC Re. Strong actuarial community.
Gurugram 98%
Second highest — WTW, Aon, KPOs, PFRDA, and consulting firm India hubs. NCR premium.
Bengaluru 88%
Swiss Re India, tech-insurance crossover, growing InsurTech scene. Slightly below NCR/Mumbai.
Pune 82%
Bajaj Allianz, Go Digit, Principal Global. Mid-tier but growing strongly.
Chennai 78%
Star Health, Royal Sundaram, Cholamandalam. South India hub. Strong but below national average.
Hyderabad 75%
Growing — IRDAI headquarters, EPFO, some reinsurance branches. Below metro average.
Kolkata 70%
National Insurance, some Big 4 offices. Traditional actuary hub but lower salary band.
